Short description
Shoal turns your Mac's desktop into a live 3D aquarium: fish swim behind your icons, notice your cursor and race for the food you drop. Free, with a one-time Shoal Pro upgrade.
Long description
Shoal is a live wallpaper for the Mac. A school of fish swims over a planted riverbed behind your desktop icons, drawn in real time rather than played from a video. Move the cursor near the school and the fish give it room, or sweep it at them and they dart away; choose Feed from the menu bar and they race for the pellets.
Shoal is built to behave like a wallpaper should. It lives in the menu bar, runs on every display, slows down on battery and behind your windows, and stops when the desktop is covered, the screen is locked or Low Power Mode is on. It collects no data and works offline.
Shoal Pro, a one-time purchase, adds six fish species to mix; dawn, day, dusk and night lighting that can follow the clock; the living tank, whose fish get hungry and grow on the days you feed them, with optional feeding reminders; a gentle water sound; up to 48 fish; High graphics quality; a betta to keep once you've spotted one visiting; names for every fish (three are free); and fine-tuning with a frame-rate limit and plant density.
Shoal's Riverscape scene comes from desktop-habitats, an open-source project by Chase Lean (MIT License).
